Chapter Twelve
The next morning, Araminta woke to the cheery sound of humming and whistling in the garden drifting in through her open window. She slipped on a robe and her slippers and went to the window to see who was so jovial this early in the morning. It was Yancy. He was back.
Oddly enough, he had simply resumed his normal duties in the garden with neither fuss nor warning of his return. âWell, would you look at that,â Araminta told the cats. âItâs as if he hasnât a clue about what went on here at Moorecliff Manor yesterday.â
Araminta hurried to her wardrobe to dress. Since heâd returned, she needed to ask him a few questions before Detective Hershey found out and started to interrogate him. It felt strange to know she could soon be facing a murderer. But if he had recently committed such a heinous crime, you wouldnât know it by his demeanor. No, he seemed much too jovial and lively this morning for someone who had recently killed an ex-lover.
Or perhaps that was why he was in a good mood in the first place?
Aramintaâs hand paused in the act of pulling a brush through her silver hair as she considered the possibility, then she continued to quickly groom her hair with a renewed determination. If she wanted to know where Yancy had been last night, there was only one way to find out: she would have to ask him.
Araminta rushed through her morning routine, eager to get to Yancy before anyone else. Unfortunately, she ran smack-dab into Prudence Abernathy on the way out.
âOh, morning, Pru.â Araminta didnât want to be rude, but she was in a hurry. Why was Pru hovering in the main foyer anyway? âI trust you slept well.â
Pru scowled. âNot so much. Laid awake all night, listening for mice.â
âDid you hear any?â Araminta edged toward the kitchen, where she intended to exit through the door closest to where sheâd seen Yancy.
Pru pursed her lips and didnât look very happy about her answer. âNo.â
âSee, thereâs no mouse infestation here. Perhaps that was some other noise you heard or just one mouse who the cats have chased out.â
Pruâs pursed lips tightened even further. âI doubt it. Once you get infested, you canât easily get rid of them.â
âMs. Abernathy, there you are.â Harold came down the hall with a white package the size of a breadbox and handed it to Prudence.
Aramintaâs curiously was roused. What could Pru possibly be getting in a package? And why? But she didnât have time to investigate. It was probably a new batch of grouch pills or maybe a book on how to complain more.
Prudenceâs attention was now focused on Harold and the box, so Araminta took the opportunity to sneak away and rushed outside to find Yancy.
By the time she made her way out to the garden, she was near out of breath and the police were already there.
Who had called them to notify the detective of Yancyâs arrival? Had it been Prudence? She was certainly up and lurking about.
